Nike: Before there was the Swoosh, before there was Nike, there were two visionary men who pioneered a revolution in athletic footwear that redefined the industry: Bill Bowerman, a nationally respected track and field coach at the University of Oregon, and Phil Knight, a talented middle-distance runner from Portland who enrolled at Oregon in the fall of 1955 and competed for Bowerman’s track program. Upon graduating from Oregon, Knight earned his MBA in finance from Stanford University, where he wrote a paper that proposed quality running shoes could be manufactured in Japan that would compete with more established German brands. Decades later, Nike continues to seek new and innovative ways to develop superior athletic products and promote health and wellness around the globe.
Sweat Garage: Owner, Christopher Slevin, has been working in the health and fitness industry for 10 years. His philosophy is simple: a healthy body is a happy body. It sounds simple but putting this philosophy into practice is very hard. It’s not all or nothing, nor is it one extreme over another. It is: if I take care of my body, then my body will take care of me. Christopher draws some of his inspiration from a devasting medical experience of his own. In March 2009, he was hospitalized with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), an auto-immune condition that attacks the nerves. It causes total paralysis, and even death. He was in the hospital for two and a half months and left in a wheelchair. His road to recovery taught him a great deal about the power of the human body and the value of health and wellness and he shares this powerful message with the world in his daily fitness classes.
